How to Get a Learner’s Permit in California – Step-by-Step for Teens

If you're at least 15½ years old and ready to start driving in California, your first big milestone is getting a learner’s permit. This permit allows you to legally practice driving with a licensed adult in the car. Here's a simple step-by-step guide just for teens.

Step 1: Complete a DMV-Approved Driver’s Education Course

Before you can apply for a permit, you need to complete a 30-hour California DMV-approved driver’s ed course. You can take it online at your own pace — including right here at DriversEducationUSA.com.

Step 2: Get Your Certificate of Completion (DL 400C)

Once you finish the course, you'll receive a certificate called the DL 400C. This is required to take the written permit test. Make sure to bring it to the DMV.

Step 3: Make a DMV Appointment

Visit the California DMV website to schedule an appointment at your local office. Walk-ins may be available, but appointments are highly recommended.

Step 4: Gather Your Documents

Bring these with you to your DMV appointment:

  • ✔ Your completed Driver License or ID Card Application (DL 44 or done online)
  • ✔ Proof of identity and legal presence (like a birth certificate or passport)
  • ✔ Proof of Social Security number
  • ✔ Two documents showing your California residency (like a school transcript or utility bill)
  • ✔ Your certificate of driver’s ed completion (DL 400C)
  • ✔ A parent or legal guardian to sign your form

Step 5: Pass the Vision and Knowledge Tests

At your appointment, you’ll take a vision test and a written knowledge test with 46 questions. You need to get at least 38 correct to pass. You'll also get your photo taken.

Step 6: Get Your Permit!

Once you pass the test and pay the application fee, you’ll get your learner’s permit. But you’re not done yet — you'll need to practice driving with a licensed adult (25 or older) for at least 6 months before taking the driving test.
