If you have a manual transmission, pump your brakes. Within three or four pumps, you will know if the brakes will hold. If you have ABS, do not pump the brake pedal.
Use the emergency brake; be ready to release it if the car skids.
If you have no other option, steer into bushes or something soft to cushion your impact. Even when brakes fail, you can steer and swerve.
Use your horn and lights to alert other drivers of the emergency.
When you do not need to change direction any further, turn off your engine.
