What to do if your brakes fail while driving?

  • Shift to low gear.
  • If you have a manual transmission, pump your brakes.  Within three or four pumps, you will know if the brakes will hold. If you have ABS, do not pump the brake pedal.
  • Use the emergency brake; be ready to release it if the car skids.
  • If you have no other option, steer into bushes or something soft to cushion your impact. Even when brakes fail, you can steer and swerve.
  • Use your horn and lights to alert other drivers of the emergency.
  • When you do not need to change direction any further, turn off your engine.
