Signs, signals and highway markings are used to create a safe and organized driving condition for everyone on our roads and highways - they communicate important information that you must follow in order to be a safe and responsible driver.
The Federal Highway Administrator has put together a Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for streets and highways in order to standardize the look, color, shape and messages of signs, signals, and highway markings.
The state of California has made slight updates to the MUTCD and created the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Thus, the signs, signals, and highway markings may be slightly different from state to state, but they should be very similar in their look, shape, color, size and information that they are providing to us across all states.
